Join learners from around the globe in a one-of-a-kind learning experience that will increase your skills and confidence in the language, and place you at the heart of a community of driven professionals intent on keeping Japanese at the forefront of their professional and personal lives.

Immerse yourself in story and push through your learning ceiling
Maplopo kicks off its second JET-only cohort in September of 2025.
You may already know Maplopo is on a mission to help Japanese language learners internalize language through the power of story; in September 2025, we’re once again proud as USJETAA corporate sponsors, to extend our exclusive private cohort experience to the JET community.
This means as a JET programme participant or alumni, you get access to our foundational Individuals program, PLUS all the extra benefits that come with our private cohort program: the 5 live calls, the weekly homework reviews, the 10 personally reviewed writing assignments, the workbook, access to our complimentary kaiwas, our exclusive Guests of Maplopo series, and of course, our private Discord community where all that often talked about Maplopo support and accountability lives!
It’s the only immersive, synchronous AND asynchronous Japanese language program of its kind, and if livening up stagnant Japanese, or keeping skills fresh is important to you, we welcome you to apply and take advantage of the generous tuition scholarship available only to those in the JET community.
A Japanese language program like no other.
“Highly Recommended!”

Maplopo might be for you if…
Maplopo might be for you if you consider yourself to be a serious learner of Japanese, and you’re willing to make a 10-week commitment from September 22nd through November 28th, 2025 to boost your learning. The program is challenging and requires you spend about five hours a week with the material. It also requires you to attend each of our live sessions (with cameras on!) so you can support the other learners in your cohort. If that sounds like something you’re up for, well… this is one offer that’s hard to beat.

Here are the basics:
We expressly designed our cohort experience to fit within the tight schedules of busy professionals.
Because of this, everything you’ll do with us can be done whenever and wherever you wish. Even when we get to the latter half of the course and meet once a week for five weeks in our live “writer’s room” environment, those weekend times are all decided in advance through a group poll, and again… you can meet wherever you happen to be at that time.
- No commuting.
- No restrictions as to when and where you do the work.
- No group classes that move too fast or too slow for your level.
Maplopo is as close to a one-on-one instructor experience as possible—on purpose.
The 10-week session is taught entirely in English for the first seven weeks of the course as you’re immersed in a short story by Dazai Osamu translated by Maplopo founders Doc and Reiko Kane. The learning then shifts to all Japanese for the remaining three weeks. In the latter five weeks of the program, you’ll also hop on live group calls where we’ll discuss your writing assignments. These sessions are held primarily in Japanese, with enough peppering of English to keep everyone on the same page.
What’s nice about this away-from-the-textbook approach, is that the story framework helps keep your learning “in context” so you can just simply enjoy the story as it’s meant to be enjoyed. It’s almost like that Japan elective course you wish existed in college but didn’t.
And, please don’t mistake this for a literature class. It’s not. It is an advanced elective jam-packed with sentences and dialog built around business and life. Dazai’s story is merely the container for a breadth of content you’ve not experienced previously in any environment. We’ve welcomed U.S. diplomats, C-suite executives, project managers, translators, interpreters, and yes… teachers of Japanese who want to keep their skills sharp and their minds engaged. Are you next?
Since 2019 Maplopo has been translating Japan’s literary masters: Nakajima Atsushi, Sakaguchi Ango, and now two from Dazai. If internalizing the language is something important to you, taking a deep dive into the language with the respected translators and instructors at Maplopo might be what you’re looking for…
