Day 31

May 21, 2025

Andy has talked so much about how much flashcards help him (he’s a fan of doing them when he brushes his teeth), so I decided to see if I could finally figure out how in the hell to use Midori’s flashcard function and practice in tandem with my regular Anki study.

I’ve been under the impression I could use Mirori’s flash cards with the words I bookmark and save, but that does not seem to be the case. If I can somehow extract those bookmarks and get them into Anki, I’d rather do that than use another app, so I’ll se if that is possible.

Still, Midori does have good kanji and word collection groupings that I can use as flashcards, so that’s the route I took. Screenshots attached. Along with my Anki deck for today, which I’ve since bumped up to 15 cards, I spent about 40 mintues on the decks. Not bad.

With the word categories (JLPT5), I’m focusing mostly on identifying the hiragana/sound in conjunction with the word meaning. This should help me with recognizing more words in my environment. With the Kanji collection (Grade Level 1), I’m focusing largely on meaning and the kanji character itself. I’m paying attention to pronunciation options and reading them, but not dwelling on them. Besides. at this basic a level, I know many of these pronunciations already.

I’m aiming for a half hour or more of these each day; hanging out with the little one should make this possible. I may find I can even do twice this amount… “doubles,” if you will. I’m also primarily focusing on SOUND my main innate advantage as a musician. Studying in this way, should get me to a point where I’m bumping up my overall daily study time… much to Coach Andy’s agreement!

Onward through month two.
