Bespoke Japanese Language & Communication Development
Plum is Maplopo’s bespoke Japanese language and communication program for experienced practitioners who need individualized development for the Japanese they actually use.
Plum is particularly suited to professional Japanese communication where precision, nuance, flexibility, and control matter—whether that means meetings, presentations, negotiations, writing, leadership, or other demanding situations.
Plum typically follows the Practitioner Track, Maplopo’s foundational advanced Japanese program. The Practitioner Track establishes the structural foundation; Plum then builds individualized work around the learner’s professional role, communication demands, and goals.

Your Professional Context Becomes Part of the Language Work
Plum is designed for professionals whose Japanese needs are shaped by the work they actually do.
That might mean working in government or international development, leading teams in Japan, communicating across specialized industries, or operating in situations where precision and nuance matter.
Your professional context becomes part of the language work.

Global HR ethics executive · 20-year veteran of the United Nations · JET Program alumnus
As a JET alumnus myself (Ibaraki, 1991-1993) and a forever Japanese language student, I know firsthand the dedication it takes—and the value of strong support! Maplopo – Doc and Reiko’s love child – has succeeded where no other program has to elevate my skills and renew my love for the Japanese language.
A huge thank you to Doc and Reiko for creating such an effective and engaging curriculum and for continuing to invest in the future of U.S.-Japan relations through language.
How Plum Works
1. Identify the communication problem
What does the learner actually need to do in Japanese?
2. Diagnose the underlying language
Where are structural, interpretive, rhetorical, or communicative limitations affecting performance?
3. Build the program around the learner
Materials, exercises, scenarios, translation, writing, conversation, role-play, etc., according to what you actually provide.
4. Refine through practice
Repeated feedback and adjustment until the learner can perform with greater control.
Plum and the Practitioner Track: Structured and Bespoke Paths
Maplopo offers two different ways for advanced practitioners to work with our methodology.
Practitioner Track provides a structured path for advanced Japanese practitioners working toward deeper structural mastery and linguistic agency.
Plum is the bespoke option: individualized Japanese communication development built around the learner’s specific professional role, circumstances, and goals.
Is Plum Right for You?
Plum may be appropriate if you already have substantial Japanese experience and want individualized development rather than a conventional language course.
If your Japanese needs to perform at a high level in your professional life, tell us what you’re trying to accomplish and we’ll determine whether Plum is the right fit.
