Day 29

May 19, 2025

Tried some ~ていたら~た sentence building today to keep me in the mindset of the lesson of the last two days, to acquaint myself with a number of N5 level verbs (read: common verbs), and to practice my kanji writing and recognition at the same time. Of the ten sentences I came up with, four fit the “durative action met with an interruptive action” structure ~ていたら~た  uses. The rest were, incorrectly, more along the lines of “I did this, then this happened.” You can see the errors int he English sentences in the sidebar.

To create this lesson, I used Midori’s Japanese vocabulary by JLPT level, and hunted a few verbs I could see myself easily using. Then, I came up with the ten simple sentences you see in my notes with the ~ていたら~た  framework in mind. After I’d translated the last sentence and Reiko was free for me to bug her I ran the other sentences past her to see if I at least had the format correct. Glad I took that step. It saved me half my eraser and a bunch of time.

In the end, I’m more clear on what I’m doing, even though I pretty much thought I had things down the first time. Durative means much longer than the quick moments I had in mind when crafting a number of those sentences. Duh. Anyway… more tomorrow.

There were a number of interruptions during this exercise, so my time on paper is way overestimated, I’d say. My assumption of the actual time is below. My esteemed Japanese language coach and tutor, offered to give me a few tips on squeezing more time into this exercise (when I have very little as it is)… I’m eager to see what the gent has in stall for me! Stay tuned…

One more day till one month in.

Peace,
D
