Spring 2025 Public Cohort
A Japanese language program like no other.
Maplopo helps intermediate and advanced learners of Japanese internalize language through the power of story—all in a single learning platform.

Immerse yourself in story and push through your learning ceiling
Maplopo kicks off its first public cohort of 2025 on April 14th. Deadline to apply is March 14th.
You may already know Maplopo is on a mission to help Japanese language learners internalize language through the power of story; this April, we’re once again opening the doors on our private cohort experience to seven serious learners of Japanese who currently live and work beyond the reach of our growing partner community.
This means admitted learners get access to our foundational Individuals program, PLUS all the extra benefits that come with our private cohort program: the 5 live calls, the weekly homework reviews, the 10 personally reviewed writing assignments, the workbook, and…, our (kinda famous) cash back completion bonus.
It’s the only immersive, synchronous AND asynchronous Japanese language program of its kind, and if livening up stagnant Japanese or keeping skills fresh is important to you, we welcome you to apply.
A Japanese language program like no other.
“Highly Recommended!”
—Katharine Davis, VP, American Association of Teachers of Japanese.
Maplopo might be for you if…
Maplopo might be for you if you consider yourself to be a serious learner of Japanese, and you’re willing to make a serious 10-week commitment from April 14th through June 27th to boost your learning. The program is challenging and requires you to spend at least one hour a day with the material. It also requires you to show up for each of our lives and support the other learners in your cohort. If that sounds like something you’re up for, well… this is one offer that’s hard to beat.

Maplopo might be for you if you consider yourself to be a serious learner of Japanese, and you’re willing to make a 10-week commitment from April 14th through June 27th to boost your learning. The program is challenging and requires you to spend about five hours a week with the material. It also requires you to attend each of our live sessions (with cameras on!) so you can support the other learners in your cohort. If that sounds like something you’re up for, well… this is one offer that’s hard to beat.
Here are the basics:
Everything is taught entirely in English for the first eight weeks of the course as you’re immersed in a short story by Dazai Osamu translated by Maplopo founders Doc and Reiko Kane. The learning then shifts to all Japanese for the remaining two weeks. In the latter five weeks of the program, you’ll also hop on live group calls where we’ll discuss your writing assignments. These sessions are held primarily in Japanese, with enough peppering of English to keep everyone on the same page.
What’s nice about this away-from-the-textbook approach, is that the story framework helps keep your learning “in context” so you can just simply enjoy the story as it’s meant to be enjoyed. It’s almost like that Japan elective course you wish existed in college but didn’t. Well, here it is!
Since 2019 Maplopo has been translating Japan’s literary masters: Nakajima Atsushi, Sakaguchi Ango, and now two from Dazai. If internalizing the language is something important to you, taking a deep dive into the language with the respected translators and instructors at Maplopo might be what you’re looking for this year.

What’ll it cost?
Tuition for the 2025 Maplopo 10-week public cohort has now been set. Current and former JETs will receive a guaranteed $400 tuition scholarship when accepted, and for this spring session only, JETs have the ability to gift a scholarship of that same amount to any non-JET. So, if you’re not a JET yourself, but know a JET, ask them to refer you to us and save on your tuition. Additionally, any learner who completes the program with an achievement score of 80% or better, gets a cashback bonus as a reward for all your hard work.
Enrollment for our spring session is capped at 7 learners.
